In order enroll in an internship through the psychology department at UTSA you must have a GPA of 3.00. If you meet the GPA requirement you can look through our list of approved sites to see if one of them meshes with your interests.

These sites already have agreements in place with UTSA, so they do not have to be reviewed. If there is a site you are interested in that is not on the list you can contact the internship coordinator to see if it could be added. Be aware that this process can take time to complete, and so might not work for the upcoming semester. All sites must be related to psychology and involve meaningful work (as opposed to clerical duties such as filing or making copies).

It is up to you to contact an organization you are interested in to see if they are taking interns and what their application process requires. Some may simply want you to fill out paperwork, others to do an interview.  In either case you need to obtain a clear sense of what your duties will be and how much time you will be expected to spend on these tasks. You should plan to spend 10 hours a week working at the site, for a total of 150 hours across the semester.

If the site accepts you as an intern you need to submit the below information form to be sent to Dr. McNaughton-Cassill, mary.mcnaughtoncassill@utsa.edu. She will then have the department enroll you in the internship since students cannot self-enroll in the internship course.

Internships are offered CR/NC only; letter grades are not assigned to internships.  Internship credits count as upper-division elective hours only. Internship credits cannot be earned retroactively.

Internship credits are offered in the Fall and Spring semesters or in the summer as a 10-week class. In all cases students will need to work approximately 150 hours (approximately 8-10 hours a week in a long semester).

PSY 4933:

For students enrolled in PSY 4933 you must complete 150 internship hours and answer 3 reflective prompts.

Prompt # 1: Describe your internship site, what you want to learn and how you think this experience will inform you future graduate school and career choices.

Prompt # 2: What skills have you learned and what did you find out about yourself?  What do you consider your strengths relative to the tasks you were doing at the site? What things would you like to work on improving?

Prompt # 3: Did this experience make it more or less likely that you would pursue a future career in psychology? Did you feel that the internship lived up to your expectations? What would you tell students who might think about doing an internship at this site?

PSY 4936- Students enrolled in this course need to complete 300 internship hours to answer the 3 prompts above and to write a 1-3 page research paper exploring the need for the services offered at the site, best practices in the field, where the field is going, and how the organization you are working with meets or fails to meet these guidelines.

At the end of the internship you will need to have your site supervisor sign off on your participation
in the internship.
