In recognition of her daughter's values and aspirations, Ms. Matthews wished to honor the memory of her late daughter Tailar Kai Matthews, through a meaningful contribution to the field of social work. Tailar's life was one marked by compassion and a deep commitment to social justice, ideals she embodied in both her personal and academic pursuits.

Tailar MatthewsTailar Kai Matthews, born August 31, 1996, in San Antonio, Texas, was the only child of Portia D. Matthews. She graduated from UTSA with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology. In June of 2023, Tailar earned her Master of Social Work Degree.

Tailar thoroughly enjoyed learning and her love for reading set the stage for her desire to apply that knowledge in her community as a means to educate and inspire others while making lasting change. Tailar was a dreamer and was driven to help foster an environment of acceptance, healing and nurture made possible through a community of care. She was a radical activist who aspired to go beyond hope filled conversations and demonstrate hope in action. Those who know her describe her as empathetic and genuine. Slow to anger, ambitious, confident and patient. Tailar was full of love, kindness and encouragement flowed naturally during interactions with her. She was an intuitive leader who embraced and empowered many that she had the privilege to meet while pursuing their hopes and dreams. Her infectious smile could light up the darkest of spaces and leave you feeling loved, honored and valued by her. Tailar held herself to the highest standards and genuinely believed that everyone had the potential to do great things. Her work was just beginning and our hope remains that through the work of others her aspirations for a better tomorrow will come to fruition.
