Indigenous Perspectives, Public Policy, and Community-Based Practices

June 11, 2027 - June 27, 2027

Program Overview

The Restorative Justice in New Zealand Study Abroad Program offers students an immersive international learning experience that examines the principles, practices, policies, and cultural foundations of restorative justice in Aotearoa New Zealand. The program explores how restorative justice approaches promote accountability, repair harm, strengthen relationships, support victims, and engage individuals, families, and communities in responding to crime and conflict.

New Zealand offers a distinctive setting for studying restorative justice because it has established restorative processes within the criminal justice system and is influenced by Māori cultural values, traditions, and community-centered approaches. Students will examine the relationship between Indigenous knowledge, contemporary justice practices, public policy, and legislative frameworks, with particular attention to how restorative approaches can complement conventional criminal justice responses.

Through experiential learning, academic discussions, site visits, and engagement with restorative justice practitioners, justice professionals, community organizations, and Māori perspectives, students will explore the opportunities and challenges associated with implementing restorative justice in diverse social, cultural, and institutional settings.

The program emphasizes the link between vision and practice: how principles of accountability, healing, participation, cultural responsiveness, and community restoration translate into effective policies and sustainable practices. Students will critically examine restorative justice's potential to reduce reoffending, improve victim experiences, strengthen community relationships, and contribute to more responsive, equitable justice systems.
