We are preparing for a project that involves mothers and their 4- to 7-year-olds children. We cannot wait to work with you and your child. More information on participation will be here soon!

Your visit

The GROWTH Lab is conveniently located on UTSA’s Downtown Campus, about 2 blocks from Historical Market Square. We have a beautiful child-friendly space that overlooks the San Antonio skyline. Our waiting room is filled with toys, games, and books for children and their siblings. Before the session starts, we will go over the study with you and answer your questions. We have worked with hundreds of families in our projects and virtually all children find the projects to be fun and engaging. Here are some common questions about visits and what you can expect when you come to the GROWTH Lab.

At times. Because we are interested in family interactions, we will ask you to work with your child to complete various tasks, such as playing with toys or talking with your child. However, there are also times when we need to work with your child when you are not in the room. This is because we have found that children sometimes do not provide their best attention to the tasks or may ask their parents for answers when their parents are in the room, which limits our ability to learn about your child’s development. Children will typically be in one room and parents will be in the room next to the room their child is in. We also have questions for parents to answer while their child is completing their tasks. We find that parents enjoy being but in a separate room so they can also provide their full attention.

Thank you for your willingness to get involved in our projects! We can only enroll one child per household in a study. If you have another child who wants to participate, we can add their names to a list for future projects. However, you are more than welcome to bring all of your children to the GROWTH Lab if that will make it easier for you and your family. We have students who are happy to watch and entrain your other children in the waiting area of the lab while you participate in research activities.

We do not have an observation room for parents to watch their children work with the assistant. However, we videotape all sessions and parents are free to make appointments to view the video at a later time.

The amount of time and number of visits varies for each study. You will have information about the number of visits and approximate time for each visit prior to enrolling into the study to determine if it’s a good fit for you and your family. For studies that have compensation, your family will be paid for your time. Free parking will also be provided to families.
