Roadrunner Rotaract

Roadrunner Rotaract

When Dominique du Preez arrived at UT San Antonio, she didn’t want to just earn a degree and be on her way. She wanted to make the most of her time here, including making time for her real passion: serving others.

du Preez’s dedication to service reflects the qualities that earned her the prestigious Terry Scholarship, which fully funds her four years at UT San Antonio. Terry Scholars are selected not only for academic excellence and financial need, but also for leadership and a commitment to giving back.

For du Preez, UT San Antonio was the clear choice. The university’s service-oriented culture and location within her hometown made it the perfect place to grow as both a student and a leader.

That drive to serve inspired her to establish the Roadrunner Rotaract, UTSA’s chapter of Rotary International’s global student network. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of San Antonio, the Rotaract club is self-governed, empowering students to design their own projects and shape their own impact.

“The Rotaract is meant for UTSA students to develop leadership skills, engage in service projects and participate in professional development,” du Preez said. “We meet monthly and have planned out service events and socials.”

Some upcoming events include two service-orientated events at the Texas Diaper Bank and the San Antonio Food Bank. The next general meeting is on October 21, and they also have an upcoming fundraiser on October 25 at Chipotle.

“Dominque is particularly driven to improve her community and is building on her work in Kinesiology and Psychology through Honors work in leadership where she learned about Rotary,” said Lynne Cossman, dean of the College for Health, Community and Policy. “Realizing UT San Antonio lacked a Rotaract Club – the young adult campus-based version of Rotary – she decided to lead the efforts to get a chapter on our campus.”

Since its launch in January, the Roadrunner Rotaract has already grown to 50 members. For more information on becoming a member, visit the Rotaract website or join the Roadrunner Roataract Groupme.
