April 19, 20201 — HCaP student Rogelio (Roger) Narvaez won the prestigious Outstanding Graduate Student award as part of the University Life Awards for 2020-21. A committee comprised of Graduate Advisors of Record from across HCaP graduate programs reviewed all applicants and selected Roger as most deserving.
Roger is pursuing a Masters in Social Work, and he exemplifies the hard work necessary to succeed in graduate school while simultaneously demonstrating a commitment to his community. As a first-generation student, Roger has earned a high GPA while concurrently working full time at the San Antonio Food Bank. Roger also volunteers as a part time manager at a local martial arts studio. In this capacity, he embodies the principles of social work and operates as a role model to youth in the city who are dealing with challenging experiences (e.g., being bullied or exposed to domestic violence). He also is a strong advocate for the critical issue of homelessness and chose to intern with a social service agency committed to addressing this community challenge. His social and academic achievements resulted in his selection into the Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society.
“I am humbled by this award, it is truly an honor to be recognized for the hard work and dedication I have for my community,” said Roger. “At the same time, this is also for my cohort who has been with me on this journey becoming social workers, my family who has been encouraging, and my coworkers who have contributed to my growth.”
HCaP is proud of Roger – congratulations!
