The UTSA Criminal Justice National Honor Society, Alpha Phi Sigma (APS) closed out the final months of 2020 with service events in and around San Antonio.
“APS is all about inclusivity and paying it forward," said Miranda Castañeda '20, APS president. "These events were just a small way for our members to show support and solidarity to the public during these especially difficult times."
For the first event, students put together over 150 health bags for Project Transformation , a nonprofit that aims to engage children, college-age young adults, and churches in purposeful relationships.
"Doing this Service Event for Project Transformation was such an experience,” said Jacqueline Coleman, APS secretary. “I appreciate any opportunity to help give back to the community and I appreciate the time and the dedication the APS organization put into this event.”
For the second event, held over Zoom, students learned about the Esperanza Court . The Esperanza Court provides transitional residential support to individuals enrolled in the Bexar County Human Trafficking Court. The program provides a safe and secure residential experience for clients and provides clients positive support in their challenging transition.
APS Students donated $200.00 in gift cards to this Bexar County Specialty Court.
“I love the specialty courts, they continue to help the community and its people,” said Erika Vallejo '20. “I think it is a wonderful alternative to straight incarceration. It is a great opportunity for people to get a second chance and to allow people to get the help they need.”
