(May 1, 2019) – Department of Public Administration Lecturer Gina Amatangelo is one of two recipients of the Sawtelle Financial Teaching Innovation Grant Award. The announcement was made at the Academy of Distinguished Teaching Scholars meeting on Monday. Amatangelo received the award for her commitment and dedication to exceptional and innovative teaching, particularly through her work with the Civic Leadership Seminar, the capstone course for the Minor in Civic Engagement.

The grant will support Amatangelo’s work to continue enriching students’ lives through civic participation. In her seminar course, Amatangelo’s students plan and lead a range of activities to encourage high school students to become engaged in their communities by voting, volunteering and voicing their opinions. UTSA students run the UTSA Civic Leadership Academy at Lanier High School and serve on the planning committee for citywide events. These events give young people the opportunity to share their views with local elected officials and community leaders.

The teaching award is funded by a generous donation from the Sawtelle Financial Group.
