(Oct. 23, 2019) — About one-third of the Ph.D. seeking students of the Applied Demography program will be presenting their original research at the Southern Demographic Association (SDA) Annual Marriott Hotel in New Orleans Meeting in New Orleans this week, Oct. 23 – 25. The meeting takes place at the New Orleans Downtown Marriott Hotel at the Convention Center. Faculty and students will be presenting their work on a variety of topics to include children and adulthood, immigration and health, opioid mortality, unemployment in native born populations, migration projections, and much more.

The Southern Demographic Association is a scientific and educational organization comprised of persons with professional interests in demography and population studies. The annual meeting provides an opportunity for researchers, faculty, and UTSA graduate students to present applied demographic research and network with people in the field of demography. Luncheon speaker for Thursday, Oct. 24 will discuss key developments and new initiatives at the U.S. Census Bureau, and the guest speaker on Friday will talk about health and demographic disparities in recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

Demography Professor Johnelle Sparks is the President-Elect for SDA.
