The Policy Studies Center is gearing up for its second annual Latino Policy Symposium: Path to Power and Prosperity that will take place on Oct. 4-5 at the UTSA Downtown Campus. The symposium will focus on finding ways to strengthen Latino influence on local and state policymaking.
As mentioned in the San Antonio Express News article published on Sept. 30, three years ago, Dean of the College of Public Policy and Demography Professor Rogelio Sáenz and Juan Flores, consultant/advisor who led the La Fe Policy Research and Education Center, conducted a comprehensive review of studies and statistics around Latino families and took a look at inequitable policy decisions throughout th history of Texas. The findings showed that Texas has an unpleasant history of racial inequities and limited human capital investment policymaking. Millions of Latino children are at risk of becoming another generation of low-income and poverty families.
Texas Latino families come in about 30th when compared to the well-being of Latino families in other states.
“The future of Texas depends on the success of the Latino population,” said Sáenz.
The symposium aims to increase local and state policy influence leading to equitable public policies which contribute to economic mobility. The event will kick off at 11:30 a.m. with a lunch and symposium orientation in the Buena Vista St. Bldg., Meeting Assembly Room (BV 1.338).
