Welcome to the Department of Sociology, part of the College for Health, Community and Policy. A degree in sociology equips you with the tools needed to critically analyze the world and your place in it. With a degree in sociology you will be able to conduct research and analyze data, skillfully communicate, critically think and gain a global perspective.
The sociology department offers a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology and a Minor in Sociology. The department also offers a Master of Science degree in sociology. The master’s program is quite active with more than 60 students currently in residence and the number of undergraduate students growing each year. Students can also qualify for the department’s International Honor Society chapter, Alpha Kappa Delta, which offers students the opportunity to be acknowledged for excellent academic performance. Honor Society members participate in scholarly events on campus and in the greater San Antonio community.
Sociology students gain access to experienced and knowledgeable sociology faculty and staff, a survey lab and a secure data lab, and both are equipped with the latest software. The secure data lab ensures that our faculty can train students to work with major, national data sets which are of a sensitive nature. The Institute also partners with local and international academic agencies including The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, the Alamo Colleges, Sichuan University and the Universidad de Guadalajara, as well as non-academic agencies including San Antonio Military Medical Center and University Health System.
I invite you to stop by and tour our facilities, meet our faculty, staff and students and learn more about what we have to offer!
